The Sycamores Bed and Breakfast, Lawrence, Central Otago
This home was built for Archibald McKinlay. He was born in Rothesay in Scotland and came out to Gabriels Gully in 1861. He did well in the goldfields and went into partnership with the Herberts in a General store, first in Gabriels Gully, then in Lawrence. This store remained in the McKinlay family for 90 years.
The house was gifted to the Presbyterian church and was used as a manse for some years before it was sold to the Devereaux family . We bought the house in 2001.
The house was built in 3 stages, the first a wooden house on the 2 storied site, then brick house lower level was built. The wooden house was removed and moved further up the street with the two storied brick addition completed in 1902 We provide superior boutique accomodation.
