Situated in southeastern Otago east of the Tuapeka River, Lawrence is notable for its historic attractions and Gabriels' Gully. Several further finds of payable gold being made in Munro’s Gully and further afield at Waitahuna in addition to Gabriel Read’s initial discovery.
The gold boom peaked was reached in 1862, when nearly 200,000 ounces were taken out by the gold escort. Production slipped to 28,000 ounces within four years and thereafter declined until the late 1930s when production finally ceased.
A round trip undertaken through Gabriels' Gully (8.4 km), leads through the old gold workings and returns along a ridge, offering views over Lawrence and the Otago countryside, and can be extended to 14 km by turning off at Jacobs Ladder and visiting Victoria Dam. Victoria Dam is one of the last sluicing dams and the road back from here to Lawrence leads back through Munros Gully.
In Wetherstons, are the brick remains of the Black Horse Brewery founded in 1866 and closed in 1923. Legend has it that a spoiled brew run off down Brewery Creek, led to hens, ducks, geese and even pigs being left lying on their backs with their feet in the air.
